Tips for Finding a Lost Pet

  • FILE A REPORT: Call your city's Police non-emergency number to report it lost or stolen.

  • FILL OUT our Lost/Found Pet form and we will notify our Operation Pet Watch members to assist and put a description and photo on this page.

  • CONTACT ANIMAL AGENCIES: Visit or call the Shelter nearest you every 24 hours to search.

  • SEARCH THE NEIGHBORHOOD: Walk or drive through your neighborhood several times every day--show a picture, if you have one. Early morning and sunset are prime times for finding lost pets. Question everyone you see and ask them to keep an eye out for your pet.  Take return address tabs (the kind you stick on envelopes), put your phone number on them and hand one to each person asking them to contact you if they see your pet.

  • USE THE POWER OF SCENT! Place a recently worn article of clothing in your yard; for cats that usually stay indoors, place their litter box outside. Familiar scents can bring them home!

  • ADVERTISE: Post fliers in all public places - grocery stores, community centers, churches, etc. Place an ad in the classified section of your local paper. Offer a reward if possible. Caution: to protect yourself from pet recovery scams, leave out one of your pets identifying characteristics so you can verify the honesty of any caller who claims to have found your pet.

  • NOTIFY OTHERS: Call your local vet clinics. Your pet may have been injured!

  • DON'T GIVE UP!  It's important to keep checking the shelters daily.

  • And the next time: Protect your pet from getting lost again. ALWAYS keep a collar with an ID tag on your pet. An ID tag is your lost pet's ticket HOME. License your pet, as local law requires - Finally, keep a picture of your pet on file in the event he or she strays again.

Become a member of Operation Pet Watch!

Goal: To bring lost pets home.

To become a member, simply email us or call us at (216) 661-7791 with your contact information. You will be alerted when animals are lost or when strays are found wandering the Brooklyn area. Just let us know if you have seen the lost pet or if you know to whom a stray animal belongs so we may re-unite it with its family.

Anyone finding an animal wandering the neighborhood should try to take a photo, then call us and use the Lost/Found Pet form to report it. Our goal is to get the picture posted before they are picked up by Animal Control, but even a description is helpful. Let us know if you are unable to take a photo (preferably digital). Pet Watch volunteers from all over Brooklyn will receive an alert with the description and picture of the lost pet or stray. The picture will also be posted here on the Lost and Found Pets page.

The Sun News has agreed to create an “Operation Pet Watch” section just for Brooklyn. Each week they will feature a photo and description of a lost or found animal from the city.
